چکیده

Extreme anelastic responses (stiffness greater than diamond and large amplification of damping) due to the presence of a negative stiffness phase have been observed in Zn80Al20-BaTiO3 composites not only near the tetragonalorthorhombic transformation temperatures of BaTiO3 anticipated by the classical Landau theory, but far below the Curie point of BaTiO3 which can be manipulated via specific aging processes that operated by an oxygen vacancy mechanism. The idea proposed herein can be utilized to fabricate novel composites for potential engineering applications.

Giant anelastic responses in (BaZrO3-ZnO)-BaTiO3 composite materials

Composite materials containing particulate BaTiO3 inclusion have been fabricated with BaZrO3-ZnO as the matrix. Giant anelastic responses (abrupt increase in modulus and damping vs. temperature) have been observed after 75 ◦C aging 24 h in these composites in the temperature region far below the Curie point of BaTiO3. Anomalies disappeared after 185 ◦C aging 4 h. Such responses are attributed t...

Zn–Al-based metal–matrix composites with high stiffness and high viscoelastic damping

A maximal product of stiffness and viscoelastic damping (E tan d), a figure of merit for damping layers, is desirable for structural damping applications. Particulate-reinforced metal–matrix composites were prepared by ultrasonic agitation of the melt and composed of the zinc–aluminum (ZnAl) alloy Zn80Al20 (in wt%) as the lossy matrix and SiC or BaTiO3 as the particulate reinforcements. ZnAl–Si...

Dielectric properties of oxide structures by a laser-based direct-writing method

Matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation direct-write (MAPLE-DW) is a laser-based method of directly writing mesoscopic patterns of electronic materials. Patterns of composite BaTiO3/SiO2/TiO2 dielectric material were written onto Pt/Au interdigitated-electrode test structures, with precise control over final dielectric properties. Scanning electron microscopy indicates random close-packed stru...

EFFECTS OF CU AND SOLUTION HEAT TREATMENT ON THE MICROSTRUCTURE AND HARDNESS OF IN-SITU ALUMINIUM MATRIX COMPOSITE CONTAINING AL4SR PHASE

This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of Cu and solution heat treatment on the microstructure and hardness of cast Al-Al4Sr metal matrix composite. Different amounts of Cu (0.3, 0.5, 1, 3 and 5 wt.%) were added to the composite. Specimens were heat treated at 500 °C for 4 hours followed by water quenching. Microstructural studies were assessed by the use of optical microscope, sc...
